Dora...Unexpectedly... Inspires LatinX Children Around the Globe

Dora The Explorer is known all over the world, and is one of the most famous TV shows for kids. Have you ever watched Dora? Take a moment to imagine her as the original idea: A girl with light skin, parents born in the USA, and speaks only English. This was the original Dora. Can you imagine what it would be like to have a Dora without the cultural aspect? That is possibly the most important part of the show: To inspire Latinx children all over the world.

Especially now, with our nation in an uproar, it is important to remember the message of diversity. I think that if she was a real person, she would be incredibly aggravated about this. Is it fair? She would think. I helped show children that a Latinx child can do and be anything a US born child can, and now people are stopping them from having that opportunity. And even now, she continues to spread that message in her new movie, “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”. This movie is set up like any other action film, except she lives in the Amazon, goes to Los Angeles, and finally Peru. Do you think that this is good? To not focus on how different their cultures are, but how similar?
Like any big question there are two sides. However, it is hard to say no, because the movie does include important cultural aspects such as temples, languages, and even showing how different Los Angeles is from The Amazon. I would answer yes, it is important to focus on the similarity of our cultures at a time like this. Many people believe that Latinx are aliens and invaders, as stated in the podcast. But Dora helps show that they have adventurous and outgoing children just like us, that they have friends and enemies just like us, and that they are still human, even though they have different cultures.
Do you think that Dora has helped people learn about and accept the Latin American culture?

  1. I agree with you on the fact that Dora wouldn't be the same if she was a 7 year old white girls it wouldn't have the cool cultural aspect that made Dora different. Also, with the way our country is today with many people still very racist, Bringing back Dora with a movie was a great idea. I also agree that Dora has changed a lot of minds about Latinx culture. Did Dora affect the minds that mattered though, such as politicians.

  3. Your post made me think about what Dora would be like without the cultural side of her. It opened many little kids eyes up to people who have many cultural aspects to them such as bilingualism. If Dora were a real person in our modern society, what would she think about our government?
