Problem Solver or Privacy Invader?

Facial recognition. A new type of technology that you could use to unlock your phone or maybe tag one of your friends. But many people see this tool as a way for the government to track you, invade your privacy, and find out who you are. Today technology is more advanced than it has ever been. But has it gone too far? Is this an invasion of privacy? What could somebody do with a simple picture of your face? In our modern society, there are cameras all over. You might see them on traffic lights, in shops, and school.

This is because nowadays, police and government officials are using this software to find missing people, or people who have committed crimes. And, it has proven to be effective. An example of this occurred in Oregon where a woman stole a pair of 130$ boots. An image taken of her off of the store camera was sent to the County Sheriff's office where they matched it with an identity in seconds. A case that would’ve been forever cold was solved in less than 5 minutes! But some people are concerned that this is an invasion of privacy, and could also lead to wrongful arrests. Others also believe that police departments could secretly monitor people. Regardless of their ideas, many groups are enforcing this new technology for the good and safety of their societies such as Detroit and Chicago. But many Americans fear that our situation could turn into one like China’s, where roughly 200 million cameras track and identify citizens in real time to keep them in line. (that would freak me out.) Are you willing to look past the bad factors of this system so that your community is a safer place, or does paranoia take over leading you to believe that the government could be tracking you? Could facial recognition be the next big thing, or the next big mistake?

  1. Allison, the addition of the Frank and Ernest cartoon fits this topic perfectly! You did a great job fleshing out some of the nuances of this topic; well done!
