Superblimp Bling

When you think of a blimp you usually don't think of a cavernous white airship being able to carry 20 tons (well at least, I think of bloated balloons drifting over games for advertisement.) But Lockheed Martin and Hybrid Enterprises have planned to release just that, a superblimp. The Hybrid Blimp is quite an impressive design with a top speed of 60 knots and having the ability to land and take off without a runway. This is especially helpful because much of today's minerals are in harder to reach locations because the easy to reach resources have already been collected. Also this now blimp avoids the problem of building roads, railways, and power lines just to reach the lucrative resources, instead it can fly and land right where the mining need to be done. This could save billions and billions of dollars all over the industry and could open a bunch of new opportunities to the vast undiscovered or unreachable amount of gold, diamonds and riches still lying out in Africa.

Lockheed says its airship uses only one tenth of the fuel required by helicopters per ton and, like helicopters, can access remote areas around the world as it does not require an airstrip to land on.

  1. Wow, this actually seems like a great idea! I looked up how much it usually cost to build a blimp and was totally astonished. I guess in the US it usually costs about 200,000-2,000,000. I think these guys have the right idea. This would be a great idea and would be an awesome idea for advertisement. The fact that this saves money but is also very different then most blimps is also very cool. Would you spend all that money to be able to “fly”?

  2. I never expected that they would use a blimp for mining! Seems like this will help a lot, with saving so much money from building other transportation like roads, and getting access to a place with much more riches. I found out it can land on water, sand, and even ice! The airship can also save 7 billion dollars. I find it interesting that they use a blimp, out of all flying vehicles. I would think probably because of the amount of storage, and maybe it might be more convenient in some ways. Do you know a specific reason why they chose a blimp to fly?
