Face It!

There is something called facial recognition and the police all over the world are using it. For example, there was somebody that stole 130 dollar boots.Probably wanted to go on youtube and be like “HEY GUYS, I JUST STOLE $130 BOOTS FROM THE STORE!” but before she could do that, they caught her with facial recognition. Facial recognition works by getting a picture of them first. Then, it gets their unique facial features. The program then runs then through the system of comparing. The software decides if they match the image of the people it was comparing them with. If the camera gets an image or a video, in a few seconds it can identify possible people. It then runs through the people with the worst criminal records and they appear first and then the people with less criminal records. The software finds criminals in a day’s work compared to a manhunt. This is a great and easy future of technology. However, many people think that this can lead to a lot of false accusations.Imagine the FBI coming up to your door and saying “FBI, OPEN UP!!”.Taylor Swift reportedly used this technology to identify stalkers of her. People also think that this could be a way of the government stalking people.YAY! They think this is a breachment of the first amendment because people might be more frightened to talk out. This must be scary for everybody in China where there are more than 200 million cameras. Yes, millions. Imagine being in China and doing your regular stuff in your life and being watched every second by the government. Therefore, Facial Recognition is a great way to identify criminals but can backfire with people being scared of talking out or carrying out their regular business. Would you want to be watched everyday?

  2. Kevin, I liked how you wrote your blog in a sort of hilarious way. I have heard on the news before that China has the most cameras set up in the whole world! I like how you mentioned the fact the number of cameras. There being 200 million! A question that I have for is that how did people make the technology in the first place?
